The "Pathway to Accuracy Program (PTAP)" is dedicated to the inculcation of the value of being accurate at whatever task presents itself to the individual who is striving to achieve a particular high quality result in reaching a defined goal. While the exact nature of what one wishes to accomplish may change with a fresh approach to each day, the manner in which such accomplishment will be achieved should not change when adopting the pathway to accuracy approach in both business and personal life; namely, striving by all means to infix the paramount value of accuracy to be supremely a part of both the process and the result of one's actions.
It is envisioned that other values inherently integral to the process of striving for accuracy, such as the character values of conscientiousness and reliability, will be learned incidentally as an accompaniment to the learning of accurate psychomotor skills under self-control. Along this way, the program is dedicated to providing progressive training technology that can help many individuals to build accuracy skill-confidence and many traditional community institutions to fulfill their chartered goals.
Long before his serving hard corporate time laboring to build spacecraft for Boeing Satellite Systems, Jonathan Wares, as a young boy, started practicing basketball around the developmental stage of second grade and by the time he was in 5th and 6th grade, he was playing against cross town rivals in the local Grand Rapids Summer League. Later, he would play varsity basketball in Junior and Senior High School. With the win[d]s of Junior Class Presidency and Harvard Prize book [for scholarship and character] at his back, Jonathan's persistent pursuit of his physical education led him to become a Letterman and sometimes first stringer and to be fortunate to play with some of the best talent in the State of Michigan where his High School (East Grand Rapids 'Pioneers') team won their Grand Valley League, Kent County District, Western Michigan Regional, [Michigan] State Quarter, and, rising to the challenge, even won the State Semi-Finals, before finishing 2nd in the final game at Michigan State University’s 10,000 seat Jenison Field House. All along the route to the State Finals, but for his aptitude at maintaining a consistently high free throw shooting average, Jonathan was never able to persistently perform at the aspirational level of consistency which he always sought to evince.
The following years away from basketball saw the inventor attend some of the nation's premier institutions, namely, the University of Michigan where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy & Psychology, the University of Hawaii where he received a Master's Degree in Psychology, and the University of Southern California where he completed complementary graduate level course work at the University's School of Educational Psychology. Throughout this entire educational walk, whenever he picked up a basketball, Jonathan continued to be frustrated about his inconsistent mind-body, educational fitness, performance.
It was then, out of the murky deep waters of the blue funk of his incomplete instruction at reaching a practicable level of fitness, that the idea for TheShootingstreak® Personal Trainer (PT) popped into mind. Like trusted others he knew, Jonathan’s reaction to the idea was a definite "Wow". "Definitely, this would be a great thing to give or get as a gift!" The next entrepreneurial step was to patent the Promethean idea and then take it to a local manufacturer. The rest is history. The next is the story introduced by the Preface…
TheShootingstreak® Pathway to Accuracy™ Personal Trainer (PT)
A story whose time has come to be told...
What does it mean to be a seeker of truth, a student of knowledge, a steward of accuracy by the Way? By the [path] way of serendipitous curiosity. Through the heuristic course of trial and error learning that shapes every child from infancy to maturity. Along the path and the rule of the lessons of behavioral consequences. It is the scientific pathway of Operant Conditioning.
This is the psychological term that describes the adventitious rewards and punishments accompanying our free operant behavior, shaping our everyday life, and providing us with spirited motivation.
Motivation to do what? Make baskets.... As in the artistry of Basketweaving?... Well, maybe initially toward the Beginning, but now we are also up to making them.... as in the artistry of Basketball. As a star, you could make a million dollars. As an amateur, you could have a good cardiovascular workout. As a beginner, you could have fun!
The world of Basketball is full of new ideas. Since every novel idea in life has its advantages and little else could be more advantageously fun for the average player than learning to score more easily, it is to this end that the educational apparatus called TheShootingstreak® PT is dedicated: to shape the practice of life to be a little less stressful and the exercise of life to be a lot more fun.
To do so, TheShootingstreak® PT employs the scientifically proven principle of Operant Conditioning to train the player to shoot more accurately. Along the way, it is hoped that the player will develop a confident sense of rhythm, coordination, and timing; self-awareness leading to a higher consciousness of self — ultimately transcending Basketball — in learning the value that accuracy self-confidence is a skill worthy of our efforts at self-awareness and in understanding the importance of utilizing a method of accuracy skill-confidence training that differentially rewards those efforts progressively along the Way. Next is the way forward.
Although originally authored as part of a comprehensive training enchiridion, the chapters included therein were subsequently split into information found elsewhere on this website and that found in the accompanying online User’s Guide training manual (See: Gallery). To sneak a peek at the story, read Foreword, next…
While this manual was written primarily as a guide to users of TheShootingstreak® basketball training systems, it is also intended to be instructive in a like manner to parents and those individuals in positions of instruction in any field charged with teaching others to improve their accuracy skill-confidence as a mind-body faculty; but, of course in addition to parents, particularly to those in the fields of psychomotor skill development, physical education, coaching, conditioning, and other such cognitive-behavioral self-confidence building, health & fitness, wellness related disciplines.
The focus here is on the sport of basketball and the improvement sought is the player's shooting skill. In quantifying such improvement, any measures would be welcomed as long as they satisfy the sine qua nons of the professional educator to be unambiguous, unbiased, and objective. After all, it is the educator who must find the best ways to demonstrate, objectively, unbiased measurement of results to parents and others interested in accuracy skill-confidence development. As an assistant to the educator in this regard, it is both (dually and duly) the roll and the role of TheShootingstreak® Personal Trainer (PT) to provide a focal venue inclined to lend itself to the clear measurement of players’ development in terms of their unbiased (i.e., non-confounded) — unhampered, undefended — shooting skill performance.
One unbiased objective measure is the accuracy of players' free throw shooting and the first unambiguous statistic is their (1) percentage of hits reflected as a portion of total shots attempted (i.e., free throw percent average). Just as important, the second valuable measure is their (2) average length shooting streak (SGSK) outcome pt#; mean[ing] sequent accurate shots. Generally, the latter can be taken as an unbiased objective behavioral indicator of their skill self-confidence. Specifically, all three self-confidence central tendency measures [mean, median, and mode] can be assessed (see: ShowTime Training Scorecard).
Although for free throws the Trainer need only be Front Mounted, it should be noted that described in the Reverse Mounting Section of the User’s Guide (p. 18), is a reference to an alternative configuration; a reverse position reconfigured to facilitate unobstructed angular shots off the backboard. This reverse position means that one's aim is no longer constrained by the tubular arms of the device, normally in view when mounted in position for free throw shooting and for shots aimed directly at the hoop, since when reconfigured, they no longer traverse the front face of the backboard; thus, affording unconstrained angular bank shots off the backboard.
Furthermore, it is this Reverse Mounting position option that allows the player to take advantage of the Sidekicker™ deflectors of the Track Extender, which can be quickly set to deposit the ball toward either side of the court. Using this reverse position is advantageous, not only when practicing shots from the side of the court but, also, when practicing hook shots and the like close to the basket.
Additionally, to structurally and functionally enhance the overall character and experience of the device as a Ball Return, ultimately to be progressively differentiated into an accuracy Trainer as described in more detail in the PROGRESSIVE TRAINING Section of the User’s Guide (p. 12), the SideShield™ Ball Baffle can be added [as a cantilevered attachment] to the Support Assembly. The Baffle provides a right angle screen to obstruct the ball from bouncing erratically away. This mitigates the need to go on a far chase to retrieve the ball, a pursuit experience for extreme distances whose frequency over time could otherwise serve to be a discouragement to practice.
Under the major Section heading TRAINING TECHNIQUES (p. 10), attention is focused on the fundamentals. The learning of free throw shooting fundamentals is important to enhance a player's motivation and overall performance. The basic pedagogic effort here is to prepare the player to shoot more accurately and to accomplish this the clinical behavioral topics of (A) Stance, (B) Ritual, and (C) Mechanics are covered in detail.
The concept put forth under the banner SHOOTING TECHNIQUE (p. 15) is that, if improvement is to be realized, it is necessary for the player to engage in an Evaluation of Technique (p. 15) and that, by quickening feedback, TheShootingstreak® PT can be valuable in facilitating and sustaining the important discipline of focused introspective practice (e.g., visualization or mentally instructing yourself) and subsequent intuitive cognitive-emotive-behavioral adjustments, albeit, rationally rooted in observation based, descriptive, non-captious, techniques of intentionally deliberative, attentional Self-Evaluation.
Ultimately, for the player to reach the desired aim of confidently shooting more accurately, the training manual can only serve as a guide to the user who is inspired to take the plunge and, together with TheShootingstreak® PT and the methodologies found in its companion User’s Guide, is willing to practice, practice, and persist.
To see ourselves in the future, as having improved the confident accuracy of our [shooting] performance is to see us, firstly, setting a goal [to align our mind-body cognition connection such that it can allow a more expansive behavioral repertoire] and then, secondly, going through the self-training steps to reach it, aided by the technology of the day to make the whole effort to enhance our mastery easy and fun. It is when effort becomes intuition and expectational response sets change from anticipatory doubt to constructive confidence that we will have built a valid wellspring for inspired performance.
It is with this in mind that we go forward, devoting our kindred energies and multicultural resources, to ensure that players, coaches, and basketball fans of all regions join the family of TheShootingstreak® PT champions looking to fast-forward to this future. To all those who are already leaning forward and are empowered and ready to go, all that remains to be said now is, "Let’s get going!" ¡Vamonos [adelante]!
