Accomplishment of Institutional Goals
New Technology Can Help
There are traditional settings for group activities that tend to enourage social interaction. These are valued cultural communication centers for the community. Stereotypically, the business community has the golf course where deals can be discussed in a relaxed outdoor environment. For bonding amongsst competitive workplace teams, the blue-collar worker has the bowling lane. For stress reduction, gamesters have their chitchat at card tables. And to communicate with kindred spirits, churchgoers have their bingo groups.
What remains that is needed, however, is for sportsters from different fields to have a place for communication exchange. The current locale is the gymnasium but, once there, often, all divide off into separate arenas for swimming, tennis, track, bodybuilding, and racquetball, etc.. It is here, at the gymnasium, that TheShootingstreak® Personal Trainer (PT) can play a major role in gathering these sporting forces together where cross-sport information can be discussed, deliberated, and distributed amidst a playful atmosphere without the stress of monumental competition. Although a geographically centralized building area could be helpful, rather than embarking on new construction or altering the extant floor plan, current gym facilities can designate a portion of the basketball courts for shooting performance training. Since TheShootingstreak® PT is easily demountable, such a delimited court area dos not preclude the court's use for other [regular] purposes.
TheShootingstreak® PT is especially a favorite of centers attentive to the desires of mature citizens who are looking for activities a notch or two above the energy level required for shuffleboard, lawn bowling, croquet, and horseshoes, but more subdued than water-skiing, polo, racquetball, and tennis. Many people recall trying to shoot a basketball on target at a carnival game. Such target practice is a traditional pastime that can be done with a modicum of energy and vigor, particularly when, with or without accuracy (as when both SideShield™ Ball Baffles are up), the ball conveniently returns to the shooter. (See: Gallery, User's Guide, p. 12., The Double SideShield™ Ball Baffle Advantage.)
This last feature is one that especially recommends TheShootingstreak® PT to the wheelchair basketball player. Following a good shot effort, much of he practice time normally consumed in rolling up to retrieve the ball is, instead, preserved by the expeditious rolling return of the ball. This allows the shooter to relax and get ready again for the next shot This reduction in fatigue is a relief factor for the arms, releasing one's creative effort toward the enterprise of shooting accurately. Furthermore, the increment in real practice time can be expected to show the benefits of practice typically found with any training over time when the time is actively put ot good use.
For the wheelchair ball player, the importance of approaching the apparatus's runway or ramp way for the ball as a mechanism of enablement that goes beyond its value as a labor saving convenience might be understood and appreciated in the same light as when approaching a public access's ramp way. Although it is true that a person in a wheelchair can be assisted by an other to surmount an obstacle to an opportunity, such as with an other helpfully lifting one's wheelchair over a curb, it is important to understand the parallel point that both such run or ramp ways similarly provide approach ways to new learning opportunities that can enable the independent person to seize the moment to act or train on his or her own without unhelpful curbs.
So it is for the case of training with TheShootingstreak® PT. With each successful shot, were an other (e.g., player) to assist by being the one to retrieve the ball, the opportunity would be curbed for the training apparatus to function as designed: that is, to enhance players' focus and concentration and to operantly recondition their shooting consistency. In fact, for the greatest progress, the recommended way is to practice the mandate of self-retrieval of errant shots. This is the experientially motivating part of the reconditioning process that should be welcomed for its contrasting punishment of our energy and form for a missed shot; in contrast to the fulfillment we experience as a result of receiving the ball directly as a rewarding consequence of our energy and form for shooting an accurate shot. For motivational effects to be most pronounced and for shooting reliability to be most maintained, the overall shooting practice period should purpose around half the shooting practice time to this differential reinforcement process; which discipline would practice the mandate of self-retrieval or rebounding of errant shots.
Also, it should be noted that such a progressively differentiated training program as this, with its gradual differential reinforcement of discriminatively different (hit vs. hit/miss) response outcomes, should discernably countercondition a distinctly different discriminative (cognitive) expectation than the program for development of initial shooting skills, which may purposefully utilize non-differential, non-discriminative and characteristically massed, practice, wherein the player is conditioned to expect the ball to return indiscriminately and without interruption, even with missed shots.
By contrast, the progressively differential training concept advanced here is that on the way to developing or, at least, once initial shooting skills have been developed, it then becomes important — certainly in order to maintain but, also, to further advance players' shooting skill-confidence — to purposely incorporate a differential, discriminative, and characteristically distributed progressive model practice program into any regular program for shooting skill-confidence training, whether the developmental stage is early, basic, or advanced; thus, gradually counterconditioning players' abiding unconditional ball return expectations with more motivationally enhancing accuracy conditioned return expectations.
With this skill-confidence duality in body-mind, thusly it is that a simple yet sophisticated reinforcement discipline of:
(1) Simple, progressive response differentiation: that is, players transitioning from a heuristic system that operates generally as a Ball Return (response non-contingent consequences; not restricted to accuracy) to one that is specifically in the nature of a Trainer (response contingent consequences; restricted to accuracy); and (2) Sophisticated, progressive response shaping: that is, players transitioning from in the Paint to Free Throw to 3-Point line with the gradual pullout of the Track Extender enabling the shaping of progressively longer-shot skill-confidence; ergo it is that such a disciplined training program with TheShootingstreak® PT recommends itself as an educationally progressive program in its approach toward reaching the goal: Valuing Accuracy — that is, our Mission and Purpose.
