Accomplishment of Institutional Goals
New Technology Can Help
Schools can use TheShootingstreak® Personal Trainer (PT) to boost the value of Physical Education classes. TheShootingstreak® PT can help renew the interest of individuals who find the effortful repetition demanded in physical education to be discouraging to their motivation for such development. It can empower the hands of those instructors charged with building the body and making the connection to the mind and spirit required to enable a student to become a part of the public body in a state of health rather than a part of the health burden on the public body of the State.
For schools, this new training apparatus presents an opportunity for supervised play, instruction, and student-teacher interaction that can be positive and fun. Conversely, it also presents an opportunity for independent play. Where supervision resources are limited, older or more experienced students can easily provide modeling, even instruction, on the various ways to use the apparatus. Students are able to engage themselves in self-evaluation, see themselves improve, and develop a sense of learning. This can mean that confidence and sanguinity will rebound in those students for whom unstructured learning situations are an essential ingredient to growth.
At the same time, even in the unstructured play/learning situation, TheShootingstreak® PT training apparatus provides a structured learning pathway through the principles of operant training to continuously guide development. This releases instructors to attend to other responsibilities and duties with the security of knowing that their students are busy learning on their own.
Independent learning is one of the primary mandates of any effective educational system. Supplying the support property in the nature of training and education equipment is a major part of the operational design of such a system. It is the good fortune of many physical education programs that, in addition to the institutional channels traditionally in place to process equipment requests, there is often available the added support provided by athletic booster organizations. As the most popular of the major sports found in American schools today (Basketball, Baseball/Softball, Football, Soccer, and Vollyball), Basketball normally participates in such athletic booster programs. In fact, whether the acquisition of training equipment is through institutional or extra-institutional channels, the operational resources required by the game of basketball are comparatively minimal. Aside from the basic goal assembly apparatus and the area for the court, both normally already in place, typically there’s only the ball to be provided before the game can begin. Thus, however belated the advent of a new piece of basketball training equipment, it cannot be veritably characterized as anything other than distinctly warranted for this major [school] sport.
Of course, there are other important reasons why requisition of TheShootingstreak® PT is a sound idea for educators. At the top of the list is the achievement orientation that is an integral part of its application. Schools find that its use encourages an upbeat attitude toward achievement behavior, which often involves the kind of repetition in practice that is typically required to successfully learn any mind-body skill. By cultivating an understanding attitude toward the concept of repetition as a necessary part of the learning process, TheShootingstreak® PT is a helpful assistant in the general education of the student.
Students sometimes feel that they are just grist for the educational mill and that educators often are slow to find ways to individualize training so that learning can proceed at a student’s own pace. One of the features of this basketball training device is that it affords the opportunity to set one’s own training pace. Notably, it functions as a reflective (for side shots), as well as a directive (for straight away shots), instructor in direct relation to the student’s motivational initiatives in learning how to shoot the ball more accurately. When students are supplied equipment supportive of their learning efforts, they respond with a heightening of their motivational intensity toward such efforts. In turn, this can result in quickened progress and further boost their educational morale to do well at school.
In the field of Educational Psychology there is a concept called ‘Time-Out', which refers to time out from reinforcement, a technique that is part of the behavior change repertoire of educators such as parents, teachers, and coaches (See: Chapter 6, by Kubany, Weiss, and Sloggett., in W. S. MacDonald and G. Tanabe's Focus on Classroom Behavior, 1973). The idea is that, in the context of a rewarding situation, the withdrawal of the individual from such a situation can act (for negative behavior) as punishment by itself, without the further introduction of anything actually aversive. Those wishing to establish a non-abusive behavior change environment, especially for children, have welcomed this traditional technique.
What is often overlooked with the application of this learning principle is the necessity of providing a motivationally rewarding situation in the first place. For ‘Time-Out’ to be successful as a behavior modification technique, there must be a corollary procedure, emphasizing the provision of positive reinforcers, the cognomen for which could be called ‘Time-In’. The latter procedure is the challenging sine qua non since such reinforcers are the incipient precursors to both the ‘Time-In’ for and ‘Time-Out’ from reinforcement procedures and, therefore, would be requisite ingredients in the establishment of any comprehensive learning program.
The introduction of TheShootingstreak® PT as a powerful new reinforcer, which can be utilized as a motivational tool to stimulate a student’s interest in sports, the game of basketball, and physical education and fitness in general, also establishes a way of reinforcing other positive behaviors at a school with ‘Time-On’ TheShootingstreak® PT. For those students who display enthusiasm practicing with the device, it can be a reinforcer, not only directly, for improving shooting performance, but also indirectly, as an incentive for the student to maintain a positive attitude towards school as a place to go for both learning and fun. It would not be unlikely for some having difficulty with school that this could mean an improvement in their attendance, which is essential to the realization of any other plans for their academic growth.
